Crime and Mental Health Law in New South Wales, 4th edition

Dr Kerri Eagle is a forensic psychiatrist and fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. She is a Conjoint Associate Professor for University of New South Wales, and Clinical Director of the Justice Health NSW Community Forensic Mental Health Service. Dr Eagle has been an expert witness in Local, District, Supreme Courts and the Court of Criminal Appeal, and has given evidence on a variety of psychiatric issues including in the context of fitness hearings, the availability of the mental impairment defence, sentencing, Coronial inquests and proceedings under the high risk offender legislation. She also has undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in law and has practised as a litigation solicitor. She has a number of peer-reviewed publications on forensic issues. She is currently reading for her Master of Studies in Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford and is a member of St Cross College.

Anina is the Commissioner, Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, having been appointed in 2022. From 2012-2022 she was the Deputy President (Forensic) of the NSW Mental Health Review Tribunal, where she sat in both the Forensic and Civil Divisions of the Tribunal. She was also involved in strategic issues in relation to forensic mental health, including significant legislative reform. Prior to her appointment to the tribunal, Anina worked as a lawyer in the public sector for 15 years.

Anina is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Discipline of Psychiatry and Mental Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health, at the University of NSW. She has published and presented in the areas of mental health, criminal law and administrative law and tribunals.

Corrie Goodhand is a barrister practising at Maurice Byers Chambers in Sydney. Corrie was admitted to practice in 1999 as a solicitor and was called to the bar in 2015. Corrie has over 25 years legal experience in a variety of areas of the law including criminal law (prosecuting and defending), parole matters, serious offenders, mental health and intentional torts in the Supreme and District Courts. She also appears regularly in extension of forensic status applications in the Supreme Court, before the Mental Health Review Tribunal, NCAT and in civil and criminal matters generally.

Corrie grew up in Darwin and received her Bachelor of Laws from the Northern Territory University (now Charles Darwin University). She has since obtained a Master of Health Law from the University of Sydney, Master of Forensic Mental Health at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and a Master of Philosophy (Research) at UNSW on ‘A retrospective cohort study of the occurrence of criminal justice system and health contact(s) in persons prior such persons being found Not Guilty by Mental Illness (NGMI), in New South Wales’. In August 2020, Corrie was appointed an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Psychiatry and Mental Health, UNSW Medicine and Health. She is also the author of Intentional Tort Litigation in Australia, together with Peter O’Brien.
