Dr. Sunny Handa, B. Comm., LL.B., LL.M., D.C.L., is a partner and practice group leader of Blake Cassels & Graydon LLP’s Technology Group and Communications Group. Sunny represents clients dealing with technology and communications (telecommunications, broadcasting and radiocommunication) issues and advises clients on related corporate/commercial transactions. He has a substantial practice in mergers and acquisitions and has worked on a number of Canada’s largest transactions in the communications field. Sunny is one of Canada’s best known technology lawyers and is consistently ranked as a leading lawyer by many legal ranking organizations.

Sunny is an adjunct professor of law at McGill University and currently teaches communications regulatory law; he has taught complex legal transactions (advanced corporate law), information technology law, copyright and trademark theory, copyright and information technology law, and mergers and acquisitions law over the past 30 years. Sunny has published widely in legal literature and has also authored and co-authored a number of books on information technology, communications law, copyright law and business; a number of his writings have been quoted with approval or cited by many Canadian courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada.

Stephen J. Perry, B.Sc.EE, P.Eng. is President of Perry + Currier Inc., an IAM and IP Stars ranked firm and leading Canadian intellectual property practice which he co-founded with Andrew Currier. Stephen started in the field of IP in 1983 and qualified as a patent agent in 1985. His practice is focused on developing and managing international IP portfolios for Canadian technology companies of every size, covering a broad range of innovations in the fields of telecommunications, electronics, software, display technology, medical imaging and medical devices. Stephen chairs or serves on various committees and industry groups including those of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC), Canada's pre-eminent association of professionals who specialize in intellectual property.

Stephen also serves on Council of the Canadian section of Fédération Internationale des Conseils en Propriété Industrielle (FICPI). A prolific author and speaker, Stephen has published an extensive series of articles on patent and industrial design issues, and contributes to Patent and Industrial Design content for Practical Guidance (LexisNexis Canada). He is also the co-author with Andrew Currier of Canadian Patent Law. (LexisNexis Canada). He lectures frequently on software patents and industrial design issues and travels regularly to international conferences and seminars.

Kenneth D. McKay is an active litigator in the Intellectual Property Bar in Canada. He is the co-author of several books and papers relating to intellectual property, marketing and the licensing of technology. Mr. McKay has appeared as lead counsel and co-counsel on several leading intellectual property cases at the Trial and Appeal level. Mr. McKay appears on a regular basis before Administrative Boards and has an active trade mark agency practice.

The Honourable Roger T. Hughes, K.C., B.Sc., LL.B., was a preeminent figure in the legal community for over 50 years.

While in private practice, Mr. Hughes appeared as counsel in all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada, in a large number of precedent-setting cases. Appointed to the Federal Court in 2005, Justice Hughes served with distinction until his retirement in 2016.

Throughout his career, and after his retirement from the Court, Justice Hughes was a committed teacher and mentor, speaking at conferences and university classes on diverse legal topics including court practice and procedure; patent, trademark and copyright law; and media and entertainment law.

Toni P. Ashton, J.D., is a counsel at Marks & Clerk Canada/Marks & Clerk Law LLP counseling clients in the selection and availability of trademarks, portfolio management, prosecution, policing of trademarks, opposition and related licensing and packaging issues. She has served as Chair of the National Intellectual Property Section of the Canadian Bar Association; Fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada; CET1 Co-Chair FICPI (International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys); Member of the INTA (International Trademark Association) Board of Directors and its Executive Committee and of its other committees.
