Neal Armstrong, LL.B., C.A., is a Partner with Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP and has been a member of the Ontario Bar since 1984. He was a sessional lecturer at Osgoode Hall Law School and has written and lectured on numerous occasions for various organizations.

The Late Honourable Roger T. Hughes, K.C., B.Sc., LL.B., was a preeminent figure in the legal community for over 50 years.

While in private practice, Mr. Hughes appeared as counsel in all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada, in a large number of precedent-setting cases. In addition to numerous papers, he was also the author of textbooks in the litigation and intellectual property field, including Federal Courts of Canada Service; Hughes & Woodley on Patents, Second Edition; Hughes on Trade Marks, Second Edition; Hughes on Copyright & Industrial Design, Second Edition; Copyright Legislation & Commentary (annual edition); Patent Legislation & Commentary (annual edition); Trademarks Act & Commentary (annual edition); Halsbury’s Laws of Canada – Trademarks, Passing Off and Unfair Competition; Halsbury’s Laws of Canada – Patents, Trade Secrets and Industrial Designs; Canadian Forms & Precedents – Intellectual Property; and Canadian Forms & Precedents – Licensing.

Appointed to the Federal Court in 2005, Justice Hughes served with distinction until his retirement in 2016.

Throughout his career, and after his retirement from the Court, Justice Hughes was a committed teacher and mentor, speaking at conferences and university classes on diverse legal topics including court practice and procedure; patent, trademark and copyright law; and media and entertainment law.

Toni P. Ashton, J.D., is a counsel at Marks & Clerk Canada/Marks & Clerk Law LLP counseling clients in the selection and availability of trademarks, portfolio management, prosecution, policing of trademarks, opposition and related licensing and packaging issues. She has served as Chair of the National Intellectual Property Section of the Canadian Bar Association; Fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada; CET1 Co-Chair FICPI (International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys); Member of the INTA (International Trademark Association) Board of Directors and its Executive Committee and of its other committees. She is an author of Hughes on Trade Marks, 2nd Edition (LexisNexis) and also contributes to Intellectual Property/Commercial Transactions, Canadian Forms and Precedents – Trade Marks; Halsbury's Laws of Canada: Trademarks, Passing Off and Unfair Competition and IP Benchbook – Trademarks.

Patrick Cotter, B.A., LL.B., is a partner at Sim IP Practice, practicing exclusively in the area of civil litigation. Mr. Cotter's practice encompasses a wide range of complex litigation, including disputes over the ownership of intellectual property; enforcement of intellectual property rights; and corporate/commercial matters including shareholder, partnership and joint venture disputes. He has particular interest and experience in cross-border and jurisdictional issues and in pre-trial remedies.

Sanjukta Tole, B.Sc. (Hons.), LL.B., is a partner of Dickinson Wright LLP. She advises a variety of clients, from SMEs to Fortune 500 companies, on all facets of brand management. She is highly experienced in the Canadian trademark prosecution process, including the management on international intellectual property portfolios. She also provides strategic guidance in enforcing her clients' intellectual property rights with a focus on domain name and Internet-related disputes, expungement proceedings and trademark infringement actions. On commercial transactions, Sanjukta advises on licensing agreements, IP due diligence, co-existence arrangements and technology / privacy contracts.

An active member within the International Trademark Association (“INTA”), the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (“IPIC”) and MARQUES, she has served on several committees over the years. She is also a co-author of Hughes on Trade Marks, Second Edition and contributes to Intellectual Property/Commercial Transactions, Canadian Forms and Precedents – Trade Marks and Halsbury’s Laws of Canada – Trademarks, Passing Off and Unfair Competition. She was appointed to the Board of Examiners for the recently established College of Patent and Trademark Agents.
