On Coming to Law - An Introduction to Law in Liberal Societies, 3rd Edition

F.C. DeCoste, B.A., M.S.W., LL.B., LL.M. is Professor of Law at the University of Alberta where he teaches jurisprudence (which for the past number of years he has devoted to a theoretical examination of Law and Lawyers and the Holocaust), Legal Foundations (which seeks to inculcate the values of the Western Legal Tradition in first-year law students), upper year seminars on legal and political theory (which alternate yearly between his Seminar on Law & Religion and his Seminar on Limited Government), and his Faculty's Graduate Seminar (which is delivered annually to LL.M. and Ph.D. candidates). His articles have appeared in law journals in the United Kingdom and the United States, and in legal and (occasionally) literary journals in Canada. He has authored or edited several books, the most recent of which, besides On Coming to Law, is The Holocaust's Ghost: Writings on Art, Politics, Law, and Education (University of Alberta Press, 2000; co-edited with Bernard Schwartz), which was awarded the 2001 Alberta Scholarly Book of the Year Award and the 2001 Canadian Society for Yad Vashem Award for Holo-caust History. He is currently working on a book on the legal academy entitled Law School: A Conservative Manifesto, which is planned to appear in 2013.

Professor DeCoste has, in the past, been awarded a major SSHRC research grant and a McCalla Professorship. He joined the Faculty in 1987, has served as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, and is a member of the Law Society of Alberta.
