Kennedy-Grant and Weatherall on Construction Law: The Underlying Law – Contracts, Torts and Legislation, 2nd edition

Tómas Kennedy-Grant KC is the author of the authoritative work Construction Law in New Zealand, 2nd edition; co-author of Kennedy-Grant and Weatherall on Construction Law; and has written numerous papers on construction law and dispute resolution. In practice for 57 years and qualified to practise in both New Zealand and England and Wales, Tómas was a Master of the High Court of New Zealand from 1992 to 2002. Between 2002 and 2021 he practised as an arbitrator, adjudicator and mediator in New Zealand, and as an arbitrator internationally. He became a King’s Counsel in 2005.

Michael Weatherall has specialised in construction law since 1992. He commenced practice as a commercial barrister at the beginning of 2026, prior to which he was a Partner and head of Simpson Grierson’s Construction National Practice Group for over 20 years. He is co-author of Kennedy-Grant and Weatherall on Construction Law. Michael has been the lead legal advisor on many of the largest construction and infrastructure projects in New Zealand and also specialises in construction dispute resolution. He is a Past President and Honorary Life Member of the New Zealand Society of Construction Law. Michael was a member of the Standards New Zealand committee that produced NZS3910 New Zealand Standard Conditions of Contract for Construction and Engineering Projects, in 2003, 2013, and 2023, and the associated NZS3916 and 3917 in 2013 and 2025. Prior to qualifying as a lawyer, Michael was a structural engineer.
