Understanding Commercial Law, 10th edition

Matthew Barber is an associate professor in law at the University of Canterbury. He teaches contract law and commercial (particularly sales and consumer) law subjects in the Faculty of Law, as well as teaching commercial law to business students. He has published widely in the areas of contract and commercial law, is the co-author of the leading New Zealand contract law text and is a contributing author to the Commercial Law in New Zealand online service. He is admitted as a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand.

Joanne Long has been teaching commercial and business law in New Zealand since 2010 and, more recently, in Australia. She began her legal career in 1986 with a law firm specialising in corporate law. Throughout her career, she has held various significant roles, including non-executive director and audit committee member of a company listed on the Malaysian Stock Exchange, regional manager with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) International Maritime Bureau, consultant (Asia) with the ICC International Court of Arbitration and contracts manager at Auckland One Rail. She is the co-author of Law and Practice of Arbitration in Malaysia.

Annick Masselot is a professor of law at the Faculty of Law in the University of Canterbury. Her research interests focus on employment law, particularly in connection to gender equality, pregnancy and maternity rights and work-life balance in a comparative context. Annick is co-author of Reconciling Work and Family Life in EU Law and Policy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) and Caring Responsibilities in European Law and Policy: Who cares? (Routledge, 2020). She is the New Zealand expert for the International Labour Law Reports and a member of the International Network on Leave Policies and Research.

Simone Lydia Schwoerer is a lecturer at the Business School in the University of Canterbury. Her doctoral research was on cartel criminalisation in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. Her scholarship explores commercial and competition law, corporate governance and sustainability, focusing on the intersections between business law and environmental policy. She contributes to interdisciplinary projects on corporate responsibility and policy development. Previously she worked as legal counsel in Germany and as a director in Romania. Her industry experience and academic inquiry strengthen analysis and engagement in business law and sustainability debates.

Stephen Todd is an emeritus professor at the University of Canterbury. He has published widely in the area of civil liability and, in particular, he is the general editor and principal author of Todd on Torts (9th ed, 2023) and joint author of The Law of Contract in New Zealand (7th ed, 2022). He has also written Leading Cases in Song (2013), a light-hearted rewriting of some leading decisions as songs, with music and illustrations. In 2002, he was awarded an LLD by the University of Canterbury in recognition of his work in the field of torts. In 2006, he was awarded the John G Fleming Memorial Award for Torts Scholarship. In 2022, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand.
