Introduction to the Canadian Law of Torts, 4th Edition

Erika Chamberlain is the Dean and a Professor at the Faculty of Law, Western University. Her areas of teaching and research include civil litigation, torts and trusts. She is the General Editor of Canadian Cases on the Law of Torts and a barrister and solicitor in Ontario.

Stephen G.A. Pitel is a Professor at the Faculty of Law, Western University. His areas of teaching and research include civil procedure, conflict of laws, legal ethics and torts. He is a barrister and solicitor in Ontario.

Andrew Botterell (B.A., Ph.D., J.D.) is an Associate Professor of Law and Philosophy at the University of Western Ontario. Prior to arriving at Western, he served as a law clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada for Justice Louise Charron. He Chaired Western’s Department of Philosophy from 2016-19 and currently serves as Editor of the Canadian Journal of Law and Jurisprudence. His legal teaching and research interests are primarily in the philosophy of law, criminal law, and private law, and his work has appeared in Legal Theory, Law & Philosophy, Criminal Justice Ethics, the Osgoode Hall Law Journal, and the Alberta Law Review, among other places.

Mitchel McInnes B.A., LL.B. (Alberta), LL.M., Ph.D. (Cambridge) is member of the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Law. He previously taught at the University of Western Ontario, the University of Melbourne, and Deakin University in Australia. He clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada and served as a Legal Research Officer with the Alberta Court of Appeal.

Professor McInnes’ research focuses on unjust enrichment, restitution, trusts, torts, contracts, remedies and wills. He is the author of The Canadian Law of Unjust Enrichment and Restitution (2014, 2022), and co-author of Managing the Law: The Legal Aspects of Doing Business (2002, 2006, 2010, 2013, 2017, 2021, 2025), Oosterhoff on Trusts (2004, 2009, 2014, 2019, 2024), Oosterhoff on Wills and Succession (2016, 2021), Fridman’s Law of Torts in Canada (2020), Introduction to the Canadian Law of Torts (2020), Cases and Materials on the Law of Torts (2000, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, 2023), Fridman’s Law of Contracts in Canada (2024) and Cases and Materials on the Law of Restitution (2004). He served as editor for Restitution: Developments in Unjust Enrichment (1996) and co-editor for Understanding Unjust Enrichment (2006).

In addition, Professor McInnes has published more than 150 articles, comments and reviews in leading journals, including the Law Quarterly Review, the Cambridge Law Journal, the Canadian Bar Review and the University of Toronto Law Journal. His work has been relied upon by a number of courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada, the Supreme Court for the United Kingdom, the High Court of Australia and the Supreme Court of New Zealand.

Jason Neyers (B.A. (Hon.), LL.B., M.St.) is a Professor of Law at the University of Western Ontario. He is the co-editor/author of ten books on private law and has published in leading law journals in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Singapore. His work has been cited by Supreme Courts in the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia and by numerous appellate and first instance courts across the Commonwealth. He is a founding member of Western University’s Tort Law Research Group. Prior to taking up his academic appointment at Western he was a law clerk at the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

Zoë Sinel (B.A., J.D., B.C.L., M.Phil., S.J.D.) is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Western Ontario. Her publications on the law of torts, unjust enrichment, and private law’s remedies have appeared in leading journals in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Australia as well as in edited volumes from international conferences on the law of obligations. She is a regular participant in international conferences and workshops on private law and legal theory, including the Biennial Conference on the Law of Obligations, the North American Workshop in Private Law Theory, and the Legal Philosophy Workshop.
