Canadian Law of Insurance: Cases, Notes and Materials

Erik S. Knutsen (LL.M., Harvard Law School; J.D., Osgoode Hall Law School; B.A.(Hons.), Lakehead University) is a Professor at the Queen’s University Faculty of Law in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He served as Associate Dean (Academic) for the Queen’s Faculty of Law from 2018-2020. His areas of academic interest include insurance law, tort, civil procedure and the civil litigation system, health law and medical liability.

He is the author of Halsburys Laws of Canada – Insurance, a co-author of the treatises Stempel and Knutsen on Insurance Coverage (with Jeffrey W. Stempel), Canadian Tort Law (with Linden, Feldthusen, Hall and Young), and Civil Litigation, 2d ed. (with Walker, Sossin and Kennedy), and as well as the casebooks Canadian Insurance Law (with Jeffrey W. Stempel), Principles of Insurance Law (U.S.) (also with Jeffrey W. Stempel) and The Civil Litigation Process (with Walker, Piché and Kennedy). He is also the author or co-author of more than 70 scholarly articles, papers and other publications on the topics of tort, insurance and civil litigation. He has presented his work at venues in Canada, the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom and China. He is frequently involved with professional and judicial education initiatives. His work has been cited by Canadian, American and European appellate and trial courts.

Jeffrey W. Stempel is the Doris S. & Theodore B. Lee Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law, University of Nevada Las Vegas where he teaches Insurance Law, Civil Procedure, Contracts, Professional Responsibility and Evidence. Before joining the UNLV faculty in 1999, Professor Stempel was the Fonvielle & Hinkle Professor of Litigation at Florida State University College of Law and Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School. Prior to becoming a law teacher, he was a civil litigator.

In addition to being co-author (with Randy Maniloff) of General Liability Insurance Coverage: Key Issues in Every State (5th ed. 2021), Professor Stempel is the author of Stempel and Knutsen on Insurance Coverage (4th ed. 2016) (with Professor Erik Knutsen) as well as co-author of Principles of Insurance Law (5th ed. 2020) and three books on civil procedure: Learning Civil Procedure (4th ed. 2022); Fundamentals of Pretrial Litigation (11th ed. 2020) and Motion Practice (8th ed. 2020), as well as authoring many articles on issues of insurance, civil procedure, contract interpretation, arbitration and the adversary system.
