Washington Appellate Practice Deskbook

Howard M. Goodfriend (Editor-in-Chief) is a principal in the firm of Smith Goodfriend, P.S., Seattle's oldest appellate boutique. An honors graduate of the University of Washington School of Law, Mr. Goodfriend has argued over 150 appeals in state and federal court. He is a fellow and director of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers and a founding member and past president of the Washington Appellate Lawyers Association. In addition to editing this deskbook, he is an author of the appellate practice chapter of the King County Bar Association's Washington Lawyers Practice Manual.

Catherine Wright Smith (Editor-in-Chief) is a principal of Smith Goodfriend, P.S., where her practice is limited to appeals and appeal-related matters in Washington state and federal courts. Ms. Smith is a former president of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers and an elected fellow of the American Law Institute and serves on the Washington Ethical Judicial Campaign Commission. She received her B.S. from Oklahoma State University and her J.D. with honors from the University of Washington School of Law. Dahlia Lithwick, in Slate magazine's report on Ms. Smith's argument before the U.S. Supreme Court in Troxel v. Granville, declared, "She is one of the finest oral advocates I have ever seen."
