Teaching Law in the Trenches: The Essential Features of Clinical and Externship Teaching

Today, many of the first generation of clinical teachers are retiring. They are being replaced by new teachers who may not have mentors early in their careers to help them navigate the complexity of clinical teaching. Also, new teachers will seldom find the time to read the best of the vast number of articles written about clinical teaching. Thus, for them, "Where do I begin?" remains a critical question. This book seeks to answer that question and allows mid-career teachers to find new ideas in one book as they reconsider their teaching and case-supervision techniques.

This book is a collection of fifteen original essays in which the author tries to explain the essential features of clinical and externship teaching. Excerpts from additional articles written by other clinicians follow each of the essays. Some are classics in the clinical canon, and some are new. Combined, the essays and excerpts will assist both new and seasoned teachers as they continue to explore the wonders of experiential pedagogy.
