North Carolina Construction Law and Practice

R. Lee Robertson, Jr., is the Managing Partner of Robertson & Associates, PA, a boutique commercial, construction, and real estate litigation firm based in Charlotte, North Carolina. As lead trial counsel, Lee oversees the firm’s robust litigation practice and has successfully represented businesses, individuals, and nonprofit organizations throughout North Carolina. Since his admission to the Bar in 2012, he has tried and arbitrated numerous cases, recovering more than $150 million for his clients. Lee’s practice focuses primarily on representing contractors, subcontractors, and property owners in disputes involving payment issues, construction defects, workmanship, and ownership of real property. He also advises and defends businesses and nonprofit organizations in matters involving entity formation and governance, employment, policy development, contracts, and real estate. Additionally, he represents licensed professionals—including general contractors, real estate brokers and attorneys—before their respective regulatory boards. Beyond litigation, his firm’s services extend to commercial real estate transactions, entity formation, estate planning, and estate administration. Widely recognized as an authority on construction lien law, Lee is a frequent speaker on lien and construction law topics. He has taught numerous continuing legal education programs for organizations including the North Carolina Bar Association, the Mecklenburg County Bar, Lawyers Mutual Title Company, and the National Business Institute, educating attorneys and construction professionals on the application and enforcement of North Carolina’s technical lien statutes. He earned his B.A. from North Carolina State University and his J.D. from the Charlotte School of Law. Mr. Robertson is admitted to practice before all North Carolina state courts, the United States District Courts for the Western, Middle, and Eastern Districts of North Carolina, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States.Lee currently serves as President of the 26th Judicial District Bar, representing more than 6,000 attorneys in Mecklenburg County. He is also a director of the Mecklenburg Bar Foundation and a former director of the Mecklenburg County Bar, where he also chaired the Bar Leadership Institute, and served as chair of the Social & Networking Committee, and member of the Grievance Committee. He is a past Chair of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Communications Committee, a former member of the Construction Section Council, and served as the Managing Editor of the NCBA’s Construction Section Deskbook Tenth Edition. Lee is very involved in his community, and served for more than decade on the Keith Family YMCA Board of Managers. He serves on the boards of a number of economic development and civic organizations, including Youth Villages, the University City Partners, and numerous other nonprofit and community organizations. Lee has been named to Business North Carolina Magazine’s “Legal Elite” every year from 2021 through 2025. He was recognized as a Super Lawyers Rising Star in 2022, and has been named a Super Lawyer in 2025. He was also named to the North Carolina Lawyers Weekly Construction Law Power List (2025). In 2022, he received the Outstanding Pro Bono Attorney Award from the Mecklenburg County Bar and in 2024, he received the Extraordinary Service Award from the Mecklenburg County Bar.
