Military Criminal Justice: Practice and Procedure

David A. Schlueter is the Hardy Chair Emeritus and Professor Emeritus at St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, Texas. Professor Schlueter has taught evidence, constitutional law, criminal procedure, and military law. He has authored, co-authored, or edited thirteen books and numerous articles on evidence and criminal procedure including five books on military procedure and evidence. His writings have been cited over 1500 times by both state and federal courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States, and legal commentators. He served on active duty for nine years as an Army JAG Corps officer as a trial and appellate attorney and Associate Professor at the Army’s Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School. He served for another eighteen years as an officer in the Reserves. From 1981 to 1983 he served as legal counsel for the Supreme Court of the United States. In 1983, he started his
teaching career at St. Mary’s. He is a life fellow in the American Bar Foundation, a life fellow in the Texas Bar Foundation and is a life fellow in the American Law Institute. From 1988 until 2005, he served as the Reporter for the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure Advisory Committee. He currently serves as a consultant to the United States Court of Military Commissions Review.

Lisa M. Schenck is Associate Dean for National Security, Cybersecurity, and Foreign Relations Law and a Distinguished Professorial Lecturer and teaches Military Justice at the George Washington University Law School in Washington, DC. She has served as a military trial counsel, Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, chief of Military Justice, assistant professor as the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, and associate and senior military appellate judge, as well as associate and chief judge of the U.S. Court of Military Commission Review (a position she currently holds). As a judge on the U.S. Army Court of Criminal Appeals for nearly six years, she participated in reviewing over 1,700 criminal cases and served as the lead judge in over 790 criminal cases, authoring numerous judicial opinions. She has authored and co-authored numerous articles on military justice. She has served on numerous Departments of Defense (DOD), Army, Navy, and Air Force panels tasked with studying the military justice system, including the DOD U.C.M.J. Code Committee. She is also the Honorary Colonel of the Regiment for the Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Before joining GW Law, she served on active duty for twenty-five years, as an Army Signal Officer and then JAG. She holds a J.S.D. and LL.M. from Yale Law School, an LL.M. from The Judge Advocate General’s Legal School and Center, a J.D. from Notre Dame Law School, an M.P.A. from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and an LL.D. (honorary) and B.A. from Providence College.
