Kentucky Labor and Employment Law

Ariana R. Levinson is the Frost Brown Todd Professor of Law at the University of Louisville, Louis D. Brandeis School of Law where she teaches Employment Law, Labor Law, Arbitration Practice, Dispute Resolution, and Evidence. She is also a fellow in the Rutgers School of Management & Labor Relations Institute for the Study of Employee Ownership & Profit Sharing. As a labor and employment law scholar, she has published more than twenty articles in law reviews and scholarly journals and numerous op eds and policy pieces. She is co-author of the books ARBITRATION ADVOCACY and UNDERSTANDING LABOR LAW. She is a reviewer for the JOURNAL OF PARTICIPATION AND EMPLOYEE OWNERSHIP and the AMERICAN BUSINESS LAW JOURNAL. She is often called upon by the press for expertise and has been quoted by the New York Times, the ABA Journal, Bloomberg BNA Daily Labor Report, CNN, the Courier Journal, the Lexington Herald-Leader, Louisville Business First, WKU Public Radio, WDRB, Spectrum News 1, Wave News, WHAS 11abc, KET PBS, and Louisville Public Media. Professor Levinson regularly provides CLE for attorneys, including live CLE programming in Kentucky. Prior to teaching at Brandeis School of Law, Professor Levinson taught at USC Gould School of Law and at UCLA School of Law. She practiced law for eight years before entering academia, including as a fellow at the AFL-CIO and a union-side attorney in Los Angeles. She clerked for the Honorable Myra C. Selby (Indiana Supreme Court) and the Honorable John G. Davies (United States District Court, Central District of California). She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School.

L. Joe Dunman is Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Louisville Louis D. Brandeis School of Law where his teaching includes Torts, Lawyering Skills, Employment Law, Religion in the Law, Constitutional Law, and Civil Rights & Liberties. As a scholar, Dunman has published law review articles, op-eds, and amicus briefs on various aspects of Kentucky employment law. Prior to joining the faculty at UofL, he served as managing attorney for the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights, where he was responsible for statewide enforcement of the Kentucky Civil Rights Act, including its prohibitions of employment discrimination and retaliation. Before joining the KCHR, Dunman was Assistant Professor of Legal Studies at Morehead State University in Kentucky, where he also published articles and taught courses on employment law. Before joining the faculty at MSU in 2017, Dunman practiced law privately for five years in Louisville, focusing primarily on plaintiff-side workplace discrimination claims, wage and hour claims, unemployment appeals, and contract disputes. He earned his J.D. from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law in 2012.

William A. Hilyerd is a Professor of Legal Bibliography at the University of Louisville’s Louis D. Brandeis School of Law. He taught Legal Research and Computers and the Law until those classes were phased out and currently teaches Advanced Legal Research. He also serves as the Legal Reference Librarian for the law school. He is the lead author of KENTUCKY LEGAL RESEARCH (now in its third edition) and has written several articles on legal research. He also wrote the first article covering depictions of lawyers in American comic books. In addition, he has published an index for the KENTUCKY BENCH AND BAR covering 1992-2023. Prior to entering academia, Professor Hilyerd served as the librarian for the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy for five years and the librarian for the Legal Aid Society for two years. He earned a B.S.B.A., an M.B.A., and a J.D. from the University of Louisville and an M.S.L.S. from the University of Kentucky.
