General Liability Insurance Coverage: Key Issues in Every State

Randy J. Maniloff is an attorney at White and Williams, LLP in Philadelphia. He concentrates his practice in the representation of insurers in coverage disputes over primary and excess obligations under a host of policies, including commercial general liability and various professional liability policies. Mr. Maniloff is an adjunct professor, teaching insurance law, at Temple University Beasley School of Law. Mr. Maniloff publishes Coverage Opinions [CoverageOpinions.info], an electronic newsletter that addresses recent insurance coverage developments, looks at the lighter side of the law and features interviews with the nation’s most unique, accomplished and celebrated lawyers. For the past twenty years, Mr. Maniloff has published a year-end article that addresses the ten most significant insurance coverage decisions of that year. Mr. Maniloff has published dozens of articles addressing a variety of insurance coverage subjects, is a frequent lecturer at industry seminars and has been quoted on insurance coverage topics by such media as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today, Dow Jones Newswires and Associated Press. He has also published numerous editorials in The Wall Street Journal addressing various legal issues. Mr. Maniloff received his B.S., with distinction, in 1988 from Pennsylvania State University and his J.D. in 1991 from Temple University School of Law in Philadelphia.

Jeffrey W. Stempel is the Doris S. & Theodore B. Lee Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law, University of Nevada Las Vegas where he teaches Insurance Law, Civil Procedure, Contracts, Professional Responsibility and Evidence. Before joining the UNLV faculty in 1999, Professor Stempel was the Fonvielle & Hinkle Professor of Litigation at Florida State University College of Law and Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School. Prior to becoming a law teacher, he was a civil litigator.

In addition to being co-author (with Randy Maniloff) of General Liability Insurance Coverage: Key Issues in Every State (5th ed. 2021), Professor Stempel is the author of Stempel and Knutsen on Insurance Coverage (4th ed. 2016) (with Professor Erik Knutsen) as well as co-author of Principles of Insurance Law (5th ed. 2020) and three books on civil procedure: Learning Civil Procedure (4th ed. 2022); Fundamentals of Pretrial Litigation (11th ed. 2020) and Motion Practice (8th ed. 2020), as well as authoring many articles on issues of insurance, civil procedure, contract interpretation, arbitration and the adversary system.

Margo E. Meta is an attorney at White and Williams, LLP. She focuses her practice on advising major property and casualty insurance companies on complex insurance coverage issues under general and professional liability, homeowner’s liability, commercial property and excess policies. Ms. Meta has handled a wide variety of coverage and litigation matters, including construction defect (with related risk transfer issues), premises and product liability, business interruption, educator’s legal liability, sexual misconduct, rescission and bad faith. Prior to joining White and Williams, Ms. Meta served as Associate General Counsel for Universal Property and Casualty Insurance Company. Ms. Meta received her B.A., with the highest distinction, from the University of Pittsburgh and her J.D. from Rutgers Law School.
