AHLA The ACO Handbook: A Guide to Accountable Care Organizations (Non-Members)

Peter A. Pavarini (Chapter 1 The Growth and Importance of ACOs and Chapter 3 Financial Aspects of ACOs) currently serves as President of the American Health Lawyers Association and is the co- leader of Squire Patton Boggs’ global health law practice. Peter is a transactional lawyer who focuses his practice on hospital-physician alignment issues, including the development of ACOs, clinically integrated networks and other healthcare delivery models. He is a member of the faculty of the American College of Healthcare Executives and teaches on these subjects.

Charlene L. McGinty (Chapter 4 The Applied Medical Home: A Recipe for Reform) is a partner at McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP and concentrates her practice in the areas of health law and regulatory compliance. She represents a broad range of health care providers and companies, including hospitals and health systems, physicians and physician organizations, academic medical centers, ancillary service providers and other related entities on a variety of matters, including transactional, operational and regulatory work. Ms. McGinty has represented clients in the areas of federal and state regulation; mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and affiliations; restructurings and divestitures; professional services agreements and other physician-hospital relationships; physician recruitment; tax exemption issues and corporate governance; and internal investigations and compliance matters. Additionally, Ms. McGinty represents physicians and physician organizations in all legal aspects of their practice, including federal and state fraud and abuse and physician self-referral laws, fee splitting, corporate practice of medicine,
compliance audits, physician recruitment and HIPAA privacy
implementation. Ms. McGinty frequently writes and lectures on a variety of health law issues for organizations such as American Health Lawyers
Association, Georgia Academy of Healthcare Attorneys, the Southeastern Health Care Fraud Institute, and the Health Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia. Ms. McGinty currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Health Lawyers Association and is President-Elect Designate of the American Health Lawyers Association. Additionally, she is a past Chair of the Executive Committee of the Health Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia. Ms. McGinty has been recognized by Atlanta Magazine as a Georgia Super Lawyer since 2006, and is ranked by Chambers USA (since 2009) as one of Georgia’s leading lawyers for health care law. Additionally, Ms. McGinty is Martindale-Hubbell AV® Peer Review rated and she is recognized in the current edition of The Best Lawyers in America®.

Michael F. Schaff, co-author of Chapter 14, is shareholder with Wilentz Goldman & Spitzer and co-chair of the corporate, health care and cannabis departments. Schaff is a Fellow of the American Health Law Association (AHLA), a recipient of the Greenburg Founders Award and a past Director, and Program Chair of both the Physician & Hospital Law Institute and the Fundamentals of Health Law Program. Michael is a prolific speaker and author on numerous health law topics. In addition to his undergraduate and law degrees, Michael has an MBA (specializing in Finance) and an LL.M. (Taxation).
