Halsbury’s Laws of Singapore Company Law is an authoritative reference on the legal framework governing companies and limited liability partnerships in Singapore. The commentary for the Building and Construction title has been updated for June 2023 by Chow Kok Fong, with supporting contributions by Chia Chor Leong, Christopher Chong, Yvonne Foo, Edwin Lee Peng Khoon, J. Sathiaseelan, Joanna Seetoh, and Chua Ming Hao. Comprising 13 chapters including development and construction work, payments, variations, and statutory adjudication, the commentary has been fortified with the latest and relevant provisions and cases. Updates include cases such as AXA Insurance Pte Ltd v Chiu Teng Construction Co Pre Ltd [2021] 2 SLR 549, Backho (S) Pte Ltd v KSE Marine Works Pte Ltd [2022] 4 SLR 1332, [2022] SGHC 11, Ser Kim Koi v GTMS Construction Pte Ltd and others and another appeal [2022] SGHC(A) 34; as well as legislation including the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 2004 (2020 Rev Ed), Insolvency, Restructuring and Dissolution Act 2018 (2020 Rev Ed), and Land Betterment Charge Act 2021 (No 11 of 2021).

The Shipping title has been reissued for May 2023, and was updated by Tan Hui Tsing, Capt Mathiew Christophe Rajoo, Isabel Lim, Gerard Nicholas, Abiramee Ghandidass, and Deborah Koh. The title is split into two volumes, thus providing a more comprehensive overview of the law of Shipping in Singapore. Volume 17(2) consists of seven chapters – from sources of Singapore maritime law to ships to maritime arbitration. The commentary reflects the current and related case law and statutory provisions such as The “Echo Star” ex “Gas Infinity” [2020] 5 SLR 1025, [2020] SGHC 200, The “Jeil Crystal” [2022] 2 SLR 1385, [2022] SGCA 66 (CA), The “Ocean Winner” [2021] 4 SLR 526, [2021] SGHC 8, the Insolvency, Restructuring and Dissolution Act 2018 (2020 Rev Ed) and the Rules of Court 2021 (S 914/2021). Volume 17(3), on the other hand, contains eight chapters. Topics include safety of life and property, navigation as well as salvage and wreck. As with the commentary in Vol 17(2), the commentary in Vol 17(3) is replete with case laws and statutory provisions such as The “Caraka Jaya Niaga III-11” [2021] 4 SLR 611, [2021] SGHC 43, Nurun Novi Saydur Rahman v PP [2019] 3 SLR 413 and Maritime Offences Act 2003 (2020 Rev Ed).

The Arbitration title under the HLS series has been updated by Professor Lawrence Boo and Delphine Ho. Within the 15 chapters, readers will find an engaging commentary related to the law of arbitration in Singapore, from mature of arbitration to jurisdiction, tribunal and award. Updates to the volume include relevant and latest cases and provisions such as BZW & and anor v BZV [2022] 1 SLR 1080, [2022] SGCA 1, Hunan Xiangzhong Mining Group Ltd v Oilive Pte Ltd [2022] SGHC 43, Phoenixfin Pte Ltd and others v Convexity Ltd [2022] 2 SLR 23, [2022] SGCA 17, Copyright Act 2021 (2020 Rev Ed), Insolvency, Restructuring and Dissolution Act 2018 Companies Act and Rules of Court 2021 (S 914/2021).

Within the volume lies ten chapters related to the law of employment in Singapore such as the employment contract and the obligations of the employer and employee.

Updated by Nigel Pereira, Lionel Tay, Walter Yeo and Naomi Lim, the Bankruptcy title in the Halsbury’s Laws of Singapore series now reflect the current law in Singapore. Inserted into the title are relevant and latest cases as well as statutory provisions (including the Insolvency, Restructuring and Dissolution Act 2018). From trustee to voluntary arrangements and more, the volume fits well in the discriminating legal library.

The Criminal Procedure title have been updated by Mathavan Devadas. Spanning twenty-four chapters which covers constitution and powers of criminal courts, powers of investigation general principles of insurance up until sentences, the volume is essential for readers who are interested in criminal procedure of Singapore. The latest and relevant provisions (such as Criminal Procedure Code Rules 2018 and Criminal Procedure Code 2010) and cases (such as Tan Kok Meng v PP [2021] 2 SLR 403, Xu Yuanchen v PP and another matter [2021] 4 SLR 719, Rajendran s/o Nagarethinam v PP and another appeal [2022] 3 SLR 689 and Roshdi bin Abdullah Altway v PP and another matter [2022] 1 SLR 535) updated in the commentary provides a succinct and relevant discourse.

This 2022 Reissue builds on the strong foundation of content offered by the contributing authors of the previous issues, covering hundreds of criminal offences in Singapore, across close to a thousand offence provisions.
