On Veterans Day, NVLSP Commits to Supporting Veterans Throughout the Year
By National Veterans Legal Services Program
Each Veterans Day, our country dedicates a special day to honor those who have served in the United States military and
thanks them and their families for their commitment and sacrifice. But the real measure of our gratitude and dedication to our
veterans is how we treat them throughout the year.
The National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) is proud of its mission to ensure veterans, service members, and their
families obtain the benefits they have earned through their service to our country. NVLSP authors the Veterans Benefits Manual ,
which is published by LexisNexis.
Hundreds of thousands of veterans are denied the care and benefits promised service members when they enlist.
NVLSP helps to remedy those injustices at absolutely no cost to the veteran or their family. We assist them in obtaining their
disability and pension benefits when the Board of Veterans’ Appeals denies their claim and an appeal to the Court of Appeals for
Veterans Claims is warranted.
We also have a Burn Pits Claims Assistance Program dedicated to helping veterans seeking free representation before the VA on
burn-pit related claims for disability benefits, focusing on veterans who have been previously denied service connection for burn-pit
related conditions. And we train, mentor, and educate thousands of lay and professional veterans’ advocates, so that they too can join
in the fight to secure our veterans the benefits they have earned.
NVLSP also assists veterans with less-than-honorable discharges in obtaining benefits from the VA—both before the agency and
in federal court. These veterans are often neglected, as they were discharged for minor or moderate infractions with a less-than-fully honorable discharge status.
These infractions often reflect the toll and trauma of service, untreated mental health conditions, or bias and discrimination.
NVLSP’s pro bono program, Lawyers Serving Warriors®, provides free legal representation to veterans seeking discharge upgrades
who were involuntarily separated from the military because of military sexual trauma, traumatic brain injury, or PTSD, depression,
or other mental health conditions.
As a nation, we can and must do better to honor our veterans, their families, and their caregivers by ensuring they receive the benefits
they earned through their sacrifices for our freedoms.
Veterans Benefits Manual
The 2023-2024 edition of the Veterans Benefits Manual has been thoroughly updated with the important developments in
veterans' law over the past year. The most significant added information in this edition of the Manual involves the numerous changes
in law made by the Sergeant First Class Heath Robinson Honoring Our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT)
Act of 2022—one of the greatest expansions of veterans benefits in U.S. history.
About NVLSP
NVLSP is an independent, nonprofit veterans service organization that has served active-duty military personnel and veterans
since 1981. NVLSP strives to ensure that our nation honors its commitment to its veterans and active-duty personnel by ensuring they
have the benefits they have earned through their service to our country.
NVLSP has represented veterans in lawsuits that compelled enforcement of the law where the VA or other military services denied benefits to veterans in violation of the law.
NVLSP’s success in these lawsuits has resulted in more than $5.4 billion dollars being awarded in disability, death, and medical
benefits to hundreds of thousands of veterans and their survivors.
NVLSP offers training for attorneys and other advocates; connects veterans and active-duty personnel with pro bono legal help
when seeking disability benefits; publishes the nation's definitive guide on veteran benefits; and represents and litigates for veterans
and their families before the VA, military discharge review agencies and federal courts.
