Director James K. Loftus of the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) leads the largest local police department in the Southeastern United States which provides public safety service for more than 2.4 million residents and visitors of Miami-Dade County.

The MDPD is the eighth largest police department in the country with an annual budget of over $548 million and is staffed with over 4,700 dedicated sworn and non-sworn personnel. The department is known nationally as a leader in law enforcement and is proud to have achieved accreditation from two agencies, the Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), and the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA), documenting its commitment to the highest level of service.

Florida Law Enforcement Handbook was developed in 1975, by the Police Legal Bureau as a ready reference text for all law enforcement officers in the department. In 1979, the handbook received a New County Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties and upon the publication of the 33rd annual edition, remains a great source of pride for the Miami-Dade Police Department and Miami-Dade County.
