Fracking continues to be one of the most talked about and controversial topics in environmental law today. The news headlines on fracking command the attention of the general public, environmental and energy law practitioners as well as attorneys handling related legal matters. Hydraulic fracking in combination with new horizontal drilling techniques has provided access to deep natural gas supplies that were previously inaccessible or cost prohibitive to reach.  The increase in domestic natural gas production is of considerable importance, fueling over 20% of domestic electricity production and the export of natural gas is anticipated in the near future.  However, fracking can have a considerable impact on the environment some of which is known and some which is undergoing further study and analysis. Taught by Professor Patrick Parenteau of Vermont Law School and moderated by Rebecca Purdom, Assistant Dean of Vermont Law School, this class will:

  1. Shed light on the fracking process and natural gas production and use
  2. Review the environmental concerns with fracking
  3. Provide an overview and checklist of federal laws currently regulating fracking and the key exemptions to those laws
  4. Examine and compare the regulation of fracking at the state level
  5. Discuss the involvement of the Environmental Protection Agency in studying and regulating fracking
  6. Highlight key legal issues attorneys should be aware of as they confront the myriad of issues surrounding fracking in their practice
