Texas Business Disputes

Emeka Duruigbo is the Roberson King Professor of Law at Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, U.S.A. where he teaches courses in Business Organizations, Property, Oil and Gas Law, and International Law. Prior to joining the legal academy, he was a senior legal counsel at Natural Heritage Institute in San Francisco, a resource development associate at LawFinance Group, Inc. in San Francisco, and a Research Fellow at the Program on Energy and Sustainable Development, Center for Environmental Science and Policy, at Stanford University. He has served as the Chairman of the City of Houston Grievance Review Committee, and on the advisory board of the Institute for Energy Law, the Education Advisory Board of the Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN), and on the Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law. He has been invited to speak at high-level conferences in the United States and abroad, including a Corporate War Crimes conference at The Hague in October 2010. Professor Duruigbo has made a number of media appearances and was featured in the international award-winning petroleum documentary film, Crude Impact. Along with the Chief Justice of Canada and select distinguished alumni, he was profiled in Without Prejudice, the Law Alumni Magazine of the University of Alberta in 2009, in celebration of the University's centenary. He was honored as “Professor of the Year” by the African Law Students Association at Thurgood Marshall School of Law in 2016. He has authored a book Multinational Corporations and International Law: Accountability and Compliance Issues in the Petroleum Industry (Transnational Publishers, NY, 2003), co-authored two books: International Law and Development in the Global South (Springer, 2023) and Texas Business Associations (Wolters Kluwer, 2017) and numerous articles and book chapters on international economic law, oil and gas transactions, human rights, corporate law and finance, and environmental policy. His scholarship has been cited in leading law journals across the world, including the Harvard Law Review and Yale Journal of International Law, and by state and federal courts and in amici briefs at the United States Supreme Court. Professor Duruigbo received his LL.B. from the Faculty of Law, University of Benin where he received the Dean’s Prize for graduating First in his Class. After graduating from the Nigerian Law School and briefly practicing corporate and commercial law, he proceeded to earn an LL.M. in Energy and Environmental Law from the University of Alberta and an SJD in International Oil and Gas Law from Golden Gate University. Professor Duruigbo was also a SPILS Fellow at Stanford Law School, where he received a JSM with a focus on Petroleum Law and Policy. He is licensed to practice law in Nigeria and California and is a member of the American Bar Association.
