Melville B. Nimmer, author 1963 - 1985
David Nimmer, revision author 1985 to present.
The late Melville B. Nimmer was widely regarded as the master in the field of copyright law, and in 1985 the National Law Journal named him "One of the 100 most powerful lawyers in the United States."
David Nimmer teaches copyright courses at the UCLA School of Law and is Of Counsel to Irell & Manella in Los Angeles, California. Since 1985, he has assumed responsibilities from his father, the late Professor Melville B. Nimmer of UCLA, for updating and revising Nimmer on Copyright, the standard reference treatise in the field, routinely cited by U.S. and foreign courts at all levels in copyright litigation. Apart from his treatise, Prof. Nimmer authors numerous law review articles on domestic and international copyright issues. Prof. Nimmer also lectures widely in the copyright area, from Rome to Tel Aviv to annual addresses at the USC IP Institute in Beverly Hills.
In addition to writing and lecturing, Prof. Nimmer represents clients in the entertainment, publishing, and high technology fields -- dealing with everything from Google Books to Winnie the Pooh. Congress invited him to give testimony about copyright reform in 2014 (his third time testifying on the Hill). He has also given Parliamentary testimony in Sydney.
Prof. Nimmer received an A.B. with distinction and honors from Stanford University, and his J.D. at Yale Law School, where he served as an Editor of the Yale Law Journal.
