Military Evidentiary Foundations

Lee D Schinasi is a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. He is author of numerous articles on criminal law practice and was a criminal law instructor at the Army's Judge Advocate General's School. He has also served in the Office of the Judge Advocate General, as well as at Army Government Appellate Division and in the field as a trial and defense counsel. He is currently attending the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth.

David A. Schlueter is the Hardy Chair Emeritus and Professor Emeritus at St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, Texas. Professor Schlueter has taught evidence, constitutional law, criminal procedure, and military law. He has authored, co-authored, or edited thirteen books and numerous articles on evidence and criminal procedure including five books on military procedure and evidence. His writings have been cited over 1500 times by both state and federal courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States, and legal commentators. He served on active duty for nine years as an Army JAG Corps officer as a trial and appellate attorney and Associate Professor at the Army’s Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School. He served for another eighteen years as an officer in the Reserves. From 1981 to 1983 he served as legal counsel for the Supreme Court of the United States. In 1983, he started his
teaching career at St. Mary’s. He is a life fellow in the American Bar Foundation, a life fellow in the Texas Bar Foundation and is a life fellow in the American Law Institute. From 1988 until 2005, he served as the Reporter for the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure Advisory Committee. He currently serves as a consultant to the United States Court of Military Commissions Review.

Edward J. Imwinkelried is the Edward L. Barrett, Jr. Professor of Law Emeritus at UC Davis School of Law. A nationally recognized expert on subjects such as DNA typing, forensic psychiatry, and laser techniques for fingerprint detection, Professor Imwinkelried is the author of more than 200 books and other publications. He is frequently called upon for advice on privileges and the admissibility of evidence of other crimes, and his treatise Scientific Evidence is considered authoritative. Professor Imwinkelried served as an army lawyer in the XXIV Corps and 196th Light Infantry Brigade in Vietnam in 1971–1972. He went on to become a lecturer on evidence, criminal procedure, crimes and trial advocacy in the Criminal Law Division of the Judge Advocate General’s School in Virginia, then a Professor of Law at the University of San Diego and Washington University before coming to UC Davis in 1985. He has also taught as a Visiting Professor at the Ohio State University, the University of Illinois, University of Houston, and University College Dublin.

Stephen A. Saltzburg is the Wallace and Beverley Woodbury University Professor of Law at The George Washington University Law School and is a leading national expert on evidence, criminal procedure, and trial advocacy. His numerous writings include the FEDERAL RULES OF EVIDENCE MANUAL, a six-volume treatise on the federal rules of evidence. He is a former member of the Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Evidence, and a former Reporter for, and member of, the Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure. Before taking his current teaching position, he taught for many years at the University of Virginia and served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. He has also served as an Ex-Officio Member of the United States Sentencing Commission and as the Director of the Tax Refund Fraud Task Force for the U.S. Treasury Department.
