William S. Bateman (Retired) was the Public Defender of Shasta County. Prior to appointment to the office of Public Defender, Mr. Bateman served as Senior Deputy District Attorney with the Office of the Shasta County District Attorney. As a Senior Deputy District Attorney, Mr. Bateman supervised attorneys, administered training, and prosecuted homicide and serious felony cases. In addition to working as a prosecutor, Mr. Bateman was previously employed as Deputy Public Defender with the Office of the Shasta County Public Defender where he provided oversight to trial attorneys, provided training, and represented defendants charged in homicide and serious felony cases. Before becoming a Deputy Public Defender, Mr. Bateman worked as a research attorney with the Superior Court of California, County of Solano. Mr. Bateman is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, College of Law.
