Maryland Tort Law Handbook

Paul T. Gilbert was born in Baltimore City, Maryland in 1947, to Richard P. Gilbert and Audrey A. Rude Gilbert, the first of two sons. He was educated in the Baltimore City Public Schools; attended the University of Maryland, College Park, receiving his B.A. in 1972; and attended the University of Baltimore School of Law, receiving his J.D. degree in 1976. During law school, he served as Associate Judge and Chief Judge of the Evening Law School Honor Court and as the Student Representative to the Maryland Bar Association; received the Dean Joseph Curtis Outstanding Advocate Award from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1975; and worked for the Maryland Insurance Division's Complaint Department.

Mr. Gilbert Clerked for Chief Judge Robert C. Murphy, Court of Appeals of Maryland during the September 1976 Term. He was admitted to the Maryland Bar in June 1977, and to the Federal District Court (Md) in 1978. He maintained a private practice from Fall 1977 until July 1979, when he joined the State's Attorney's Office of Howard County. He returned to private practice from 1979 until 1982, when he accepted a position with the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, as a Personnel Officer, specializing in Public Sector Labor Law. He retired from that position in 2011. While in that position, he also maintained a part-time private civil practice.

He has also served as a Student Chapter Officer and a National Officer of the Intercollegiate Law Fraternity of Sigma Delta Kappa.

He co-authored the previous three editions of the Maryland Tort Law Handbook, and the annual supplements for each through 2018. He authored the 2019 supplement and the forthcoming Fourth Edition (2020).

Richard J. Gilbert is Juvenile and Domestic Relations Master for the Circuit Court, Baltimore County. He was Lecturer in Business Law at Towson State University from 1983 to 1985. He received his J.D. from the University of Baltimore. He is also a co-author of the Maryland Tort Law Handbook (LexisNexis).
