Gilson on Trademarks

Jerome Gilson, the original author of Gilson on Trademarks (1974), is a shareholder in the Chicago intellectual property law firm Brinks Gilson & Lione, which celebrated its Centennial in 2017. He graduated from the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, served on the Northwestern Law Review, and has specialized in trademark and unfair competition law for over fifty years. He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and eight United States Courts of Appeals.

Anne Gilson LaLonde is the author of this article and the trademark treatise Gilson on Trademarks, published by LexisNexis. She has worked on the treatise in various capacities for twenty-one years and took over full authorship from her father, Jerome Gilson, on January 1, 2006. She updates the analysis and forms volumes of the treatise three times a year to reflect current developments and add more in-depth research. Anne has long been active in INTA and is serving as Chair of the U.S. Subcommittee of the Legislation and Regulation Committee for the 2020-21 term. She recently completed her three-year term (2018-2020) on the Trademark Public Advisory Committee of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. In 2020, Anne received the INTA Service Award for the Advancement of Association Objectives. And she occasionally writes for Strong Language, "a sweary blog about swearing," which is at stronglang.wordpress.com. She has participated for twelve years in a row, writing a draft of a “novel” each year. In other creative endeavors, her current Dungeons and Dragons character is a stout halfling rogue named Bing Tenderdove. If you want to know her academic and legal background, here it is: After graduating cum laude from Princeton University with a degree in philosophy, Anne graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School after serving as Book Review Editor of the Michigan Law Review. She practiced at Sidley & Austin in Washington, D.C. in the firm’s Litigation Practice Group before her judicial clerkship in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Anne is an inactive member of the Illinois and District of Columbia bars and a member of the bar of the United States Supreme Court. She lives in Vermont with her family.
