Adoption Law and Practice

Professor Hollinger has also written on the history of adoption, procreative freedom, the "new" reproductive technologies, and American family law. She is the Reporter for the Uniform Adoption Act of the National Conference on Uniform State Laws and serves on the U.S. State Department's Advisory Group on Intercountry Adoption. She has been on the National Board of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and on the PPFA Legal Advisory Council. Before embarking on her teaching career, she practiced law in New York State, and she remains a member of the New York State Bar.

Joan Heifetz Hollinger has been a Visiting Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, since 1993. She has also taught courses in Family Law, and Children and the Law, at a number of other schools including Stanford, Michigan, University of Detroit, SUNY Buffalo, Hastings, Golden Gate, and Davis.

Professor Hollinger is the recipient of several fellowships, including one from the American Bar Foundation, to assist in her research on the legal and social history of adoption. While at the University of Detroit, she received three different Distinguished Teaching and Research Awards.

Joan Heifetz Hollinger received her J.D. degree cum laude from SUNY Buffalo Law School, her M.A. in History from the University of California at Berkeley, and her B.A. degree with High Honors from Swarthmore College. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and of the Frank Murphy Honor Society at the University of Detroit.
