Constitutional Theory: Arguments and Perspectives

Michael J. Gerhardt is Samuel Ashe Distinguished Professor of Constitutional Law and Director of the UNC Center on Law and Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, Professor Gerhardt is a nationally recognized expert on constitutional conflicts, and has participated in the confirmation proceedings for five of the nine justices currently sitting on the Supreme Court, including most recently as Special Counsel to Chairman Patrick Leahy and the Senate Judiciary Committee on the nominations of Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. Besides testifying in a number of hearings before the House and Senate, Professor Gerhardt has published dozens of law review articles and several books, including leading treatises on the impeachment and appointments processes and The Power of Precedent (Oxford University Press 2008) and The Forgotten Presidents: Their Untold Constitutional Legacy (Oxford University Press 2013).

Stephen M. Griffin is Rutledge C. Clement Jr. Professor in Constitutional Law at Tulane Law School. He specializes in constitutional theory and history and his work emphasizes understanding American constitutional law from an interdisciplinary, historical point of view. He is the author of American Constitutionalism: From Theory to Politics (Princeton University Press 1996) and Long Wars and the Constitution (Harvard University Press 2013). His writing, which includes more than 40 articles, book chapters, and reviews on constitutional law and theory, has been cited in political science and history journals as well as law reviews.

Thomas D. Rowe, Jr., is Elvin R. Latty Professor Emeritus, Duke University School of Law, where he taught from 1975 through 2007. During his teaching career he taught Constitutional Law, Constitutional Theory, Civil Procedure, Federal Courts, and Remedies. His articles and reviews on constitutional law and theory have appeared in the Texas Law Review, Georgetown Law Journal, Constitutional Commentary, and the Washington Law Review.

Lawrence B. Solum is Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center. A graduate of Harvard Law School, he writes extensively on topics in constitutional theory and the philosophy of law. His articles appear in the Harvard Law Review, Michigan Law Review, University of Chicago Law Review, Virginia Law Review, and the Yale Law Journal, among other venues. His work has been cited by the United States Supreme Court and every Circuit of the United States Courts of Appeals.
